The Spirit of Olaszrizling on Lake Balaton’s Northern Shore
The Balatonfüred–Csopak wine district, stretching along the northern shore of Lake Balaton, is one of Hungary’s most historic and refined wine areas. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times, and through the centuries, the hills above the lake have remained devoted to the vine. Medieval abbeys, noble estates, and centuries-old cellars still testify to a living tradition that continues today.
The region enjoys a temperate climate shaped by the lake’s moderating influence — sunlight reflected from the water by day, cool breezes from the forests by night. Its diverse soils, from dolomite and limestone to red sandstone and marl, create wines that are fresh, mineral, and beautifully balanced. Around Csopak, they are sleek and saline; around Balatonfüred, fuller and rounder; while the volcanic Tihany Peninsula adds a distinct character to its reds and rosés.
Olaszrizling is the emblematic grape of the district, producing elegant, terroir-driven wines with purity and depth. The Csopak Codex, founded in 2012, ensures the highest quality and authenticity, while Balatonfüred’s Rizling Generation continues this spirit of excellence. Alongside whites, reds like Kékfrankos, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are gaining prominence, especially on Tihany’s volcanic slopes.
