Wine and Geographical Highlights
The Balatonfüred-Csopak wine region is one of Hungary’s most exciting white wine areas, known as the stronghold of Olaszrizling. The strict Csopak Codex ensures quality, while Balatonfüred’s Rizling Generation brings vibrancy to the wine community. Stretching about 12 kilometers along Lake Balaton’s northern shore, the landscape is shaped by rolling hills, valleys, and volcanic remnants. Unfortunately, many prime vineyard areas have been lost to holiday developments over the years, reducing today’s vineyard area to just 2,027 hectares.
Climate, Soil, and Viticulture
Lake Balaton’s moderating effect and cool nighttime forest air create an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The soils are diverse, including schist, sandstone, dolomite, limestone, and occasional basalt, contributing to a variety of wine styles. The historic vineyards echo the region’s centuries-old winemaking heritage.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Viticulture here predates the Romans and flourished under Roman rule, later thriving in medieval times under church ownership. Although it declined during Ottoman rule, the 19th century saw a revival. Balatonfüred became a spa and cultural hub, further boosting the region’s wine fame.
Wine Styles and Varieties
Today, the region is primarily known for its white wines, with Olaszrizling as the flagship grape. Csopak’s wines are typically elegant and light, while Balatonfüred’s are fuller and more robust. The soil diversity allows for unique village- and vineyard-specific expressions. Furmint, once widespread, is making a comeback, along with Chardonnay and Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris).
Tourism and Attractions
This region offers year-round cultural and natural attractions. Balatonfüred hosts the famous Anna Ball and Wine Weeks, while Csopak charms with jazz picnics and historic churches. The Tihany Peninsula features geyser cones, lavender fields, and the Benedictine Abbey — must-see highlights. From winery visits to medieval ruins and adventure parks, there’s something for every wine lover.
Olaszrizling – The Heart of the Region
Despite its name meaning “Italian Riesling,” Olaszrizling is unrelated to the German Riesling, and its origins remain debated. It’s Hungary’s most widely planted grape variety, prized for its versatility: from light, fresh wines to full-bodied, complex ones. It often shows notes of almond, apricot, and citrus, with a characteristic bitter almond finish. Thanks to its high acidity, it ages well. In the Balatonfüred-Csopak region, the cooling lake breezes and mineral-rich soils produce truly elegant and aromatic wines.
